Oznowicz (puppeteer)
Mother: Frances Oznowicz (puppeteer)
Wife: Robin Garsen (m. 12-Dec-1979, two children

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Yoda, Miss Piggy, and The Stepford Wives

Frank Oz is a puppeteer and motion picture director. He created many of the voices and operated "Muppets" for Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, and he has directed movies such as Little Shop of Horrors and The Stepford Wives. He was born to puppeteer parents in England, who emigrated to the United States when he was five years old. Oz played with puppets from a very early age, started staging his own puppet shows at 12, and was an accomplished amateur puppeteer by high school.

Jim Henson met Oz at a California convention of puppeteers, and hired Oz in 1963. They worked together for decades. Oz performed an early version of the Cookie Monster for Our Place, a children's show that aired on CBS in 1967, and Henson, Oz, and the Muppets became cornerstones of Western culture with the debut of Sesame Street in 1969, followed by The Muppet Show and later a series of Muppet movies. Oz's Muppet characters include Bert, Grover, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, the Cookie Monster, Sam the Eagle, Swedish Chef, and most famously, Yoda, the oracle of wisdom in the Star Wars movies. Producer George Lucas gave Oz a great deal of leeway in designing Yoda's appearance, and the character's reversed grammar was Oz's idea.

In 1982, Henson and Oz co-directed The Dark Crystal, a fantasy told through puppetry. Oz alone directed The Muppets Take Manhattan, and later Little Shop of Horrors, where more than two dozen puppeteers operated an enormous man-eating plant-puppet. But Little Shop was mostly a live-action film, and its success made Oz a bankable Hollywood director, puppets or no puppets. As a director, Oz's credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, What About Bob?, HouseSitter, In & Out, Bowfinger, and The Stepford Wives. Oz has also appeared in cameo roles in several films. Certainly it is not an absurd thought that Monroe could portryaa woman who would get paid to "go to the powder room"; we are simply stalled at price negotiations.
With Audrey Hepburn, at the high end, receiving $50 for her services; how much would Marilyn fetch? First, one single organization is manning and operating the whole social mechanism. The same organization not only produces but also distributes all goods and services. [Technocracy Study Course, Hubbert & Scott, p. 238-239]

If you study the card above, you will note that contains a microchip as it serves as a universal identity card. This reflects Technocracy’s philosophy that each person in society must be meticulously monitored and accounted for in order to track what they consume in terms of energy, and also what they contribute to the manufacturing process.

Personal carbon rationing would be a UK-wide allowance system covering the carbon emissions generated from the fossil fuel energy used by individuals within the home and for personal transport, including carbon equivalent emissions from air travel. It would account for around half of current UK carbon emissions from energy. The primary aim of the scheme would be to deliver guaranteed levels of carbon savings in successive years in an equitable way. The government’s current target of a 60% reduction by 2050, or more stringent targets, would assuredly be met in this way.

Les Beat Girls have been pretty quiescent on Zen Running Order, but we were inspired by Doowad & Johnny Luddite's wonderful "Just the Facts, Man." We're the type of gals who've always believed that having answers is no more important than raising questions (though neither is as important as raising hell). Mitchell, though, will forever be remembered
as the architect of the sound of Hi Records. In its heyday in the
mid-1970s, Hi-Records was home to musicians like Ann Peebles
(“I Can’t Stand the Rain”), Syl Johnson, O.V. Wright, Otis Clay
and most famously Al Green.

Willie Mitchell was born in Ashland, Mississippi in 1928 and began
playing music during high school . In his formative years in the 1950s,
when he settled in Memphis after a stint in the Armed Services, Mitchell
played with or behind a who’s who of Memphis based musicians including Al
Jackson, Jr. (future drummer for the groundbreaking Booker T. and the MGs)
and young jazz giants like Phineas Newborn, Jr. and Charles Lloyd.
By the end of the 1950s, Mitchell was a well respected session musician,
though he harbored a desire to be a leader in his own right.

In the early 1960s, Mitchell released a few instrumental singles on the
fledgling Hi Records, but also began to produce artists for the label.
At the time Mitchell, whose musical sensibilities were geared to Jazz,
began, like most of the nation, to become enthralled with the burgeoning
Soul sound that was exploding in places like Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia
and of course Memphis, where the Stax label was a singular force.

Mitchell was touring in support his highest charting single, “Soul Serenade,"
a cover of the King Curtis track, when he first heard Al Green in Midland, TX.
Green was the opening act and still living off his one hit single at the time
“Back Up Train.” As Mitchell recalls upon hearing Green that first time,
“This guy has got the style, he’s got the sound to really be something.” Mitchell
brought Green into the fold and though it was an initial struggle to get the
singer on board with the style that Mitchell envisioned, they eventually hit with
Green’s idiosyncratic cover of the Temptation’s “I Can’t” Get Next to You” (1970).
With the follow-up “Tired of Being Alone” and then the classic “Let’s Stay Together”
the Hi Soul sound was fully developed.

Mitchell did, what few contemporary producers continue to do; he took a novice singer
and produced a fully-developed artist—arguably one of the greatest of the late 20th
Century. Mitchell deserves every accolade for what was a significant career in his own
right, but in the end it will be those sides he cut with Al Green that will make
him immortal.

Willie Mitchell - 20-75

O.V. No Fanfare for ‘Sesame Street’ in Britain
By Dave Itzkoff

As generations who grew up on “Sesame Street” prepare to celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary, an article for BBC News Magazine by Tom Geoghegan and Megan Lane attempts to explain why British viewers regard the occasion with an Oscar-like “phooey.”

Though “Sesame Street” is broadcast in 140 nations worldwide, they write, it has not been shown in Britain since March 2001; a variation called “Sesame Tree” is seen in Northern Ireland, and spinoffs called “Elmo’s World” and “Bert and Ernie’s Great Adventures” are broadcast on Britain’s Five channel.

Back in the day, “Sesame Street” had a hard time breaking into Britain: the BBC initially rejected the show, believing that it had “authoritarian aims” in trying to change children’s behavior. (The BBC’s head of children’s programming at the time said, “This sounds like indoctrination, and a dangerous extension of the use of television.”) When it finally had its premiere in 1971, a television critic for The Times of London wrote that it was “neither good enough nor bad enough” to justify all the fuss.

Today, Nick Wilson, the director of children’s programming at Five, says that an hour-long program like “Sesame Street” is too difficult to fit into a schedule, and that the channel prefers to put British voices on imported shows.

Mr. Wilson says, “The style of the program is a tad out-dated — there are very few puppet shows around now.” He adds that some of the celebrity guests “Sesame Street” are not familiar to British viewers, and that the “glory days” of cameos from performers like Stevie Wonder are long gone.

But Tim Teeman, a television critic for The Times of London, comes to the show’s defense, telling the magazine:

I don’t know if I learned anything but I felt like I was learning something. If you grew up in a boring, white British environment, it showed you a place with black faces, different cultures and creeds and people living together in harmony. … It was the first time I ever saw New York and it looked like this really cool place. This street where everyone knew each other’s names. It introduced all kinds of things to kids, like community, getting along with different kinds of people and learning about issues.

Track Artist Title
1. Though he was intended to be removed from the cast after the first season, he returned as a full-time character in the third, and remained a regular character for many years. Closely identified with the show, he often appeared as an easily frustrated lecturer, a straight man to the humorous antics of another Muppet, or a news reporter interviewing storybook characters for Sesame Street News. He most often interacted with Grover and, to a slightly lesser extent, Cookie Monster. The various songs he sang on Sesame Street tended to be meaningful in nature, most memorably his song "Bein' Green".

Following the death of Jim Henson, Kermit was used less frequently on Sesame Street, but still made new appearances until 2001. Unlike the rest of the show's Muppets, he was not created for the exclusive use of Sesame Workshop, and has rarely been a part of the show's merchandise. All Muppet characters originally belonged to the Jim Henson Company, but when the opportunity came for Sesame Workshop to buy its characters for $180 million, Kermit was not included in the deal. The character now belongs to The Muppets Studio; however, Sesame Workshop does have permission to use old sketches featuring Kermit.

In The Muppet Show television series, Kermit was the central character, the frontman and the long-suffering stage manager of the theatre show, trying to keep order amidst the chaos created by the other Muppets. Jim Henson once claimed that Kermit's job on the Muppet Show was much like his own: "trying to get a bunch of crazies to actually get the job done." It was on this show that the running joke of Kermit being pursued by leading lady Miss Piggy developed.

On Muppets Tonight, Kermit was still a main character, although he was the producer rather than frontman. He appeared in many parody sketches such as NYPD Green, City Schtickers, Flippers, and The Muppet Odd Squad, as well as in the Psychiatrist's Office sketch.

Kermit also served as the mascot for The Jim Henson Company, until the sale of the Muppet characters to The Walt Disney Company. A Kermit puppet can be seen at the National Museum of American History.

Kermit has also played a central role in most of the Muppet movies except for Muppets From Space which was focused on Gonzo the Great.

Making Of This Mix:

As soon as I heard that Sesame Street was celebrating its 40th Anniversary, I ran up to the attic, grabbed the old Califone 1410K (record players the grade school teachers used in the States years ago!) and dusted off a few Sesame Street/Children's Television Workshop record albums. I made a compilation of my most favourite tunes over the years using the conference:memo feature on my cellular phone.

Use info below to create your own muppet mix:

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/cookiedisco.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/ssfevercisforcookie.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/eatincookie.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/oneofthesethingscookiemonster.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/dointhepigeon.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/idontwanttoliveonthemoon.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/holdyourear.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/lalala.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/paperclip.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/rubberduckie.mp3

http://members.tripod.com/Tiny_dancer/sssounds.html#songs

UPDATE!!!
Watch Mr. Patillo play the flute and beatbox your favourite melody:

ESSENTIALS [Bobby Seale Edition]

Track Artist Title
1. The murder charges were dismissed after the jury failed to reach a verdict.
- "I created the free breakfast program." "We had free sickle-cell screenings...and we did this with no government money. We got so many donations from Hollywood people..."
- In 1973, Seale won more than a third of the votes when he ran for mayor of Oakland.
- While he lived in Philadelphia in the 80s and '90s, he worked for Temple University, ran a youth program, wrote three books and perfected barbecue recipes for a successful cookbook.

BOBBY SEALE'S HICKORY-QUICK BARBEQUE BASTE-MARINADE
When you don't have a lot of leisure time but have a craving, try the following barbeque baste recipe for pit-baste smoking. It gives a hickory-smoke flavor to almost any meat or poultry entree you desire.

1 cup cider vinegar or red wine vinegar
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, seeded (use rinds cut up in pot)
3/4 to 1 cup (6 to 8 ounces) pure hickory liquid smoke
1 cup red cooking wine (optional)
1 tablespoon each liquid garlic and liquid onion (or chop 2 onions)
1 cup Worcestershire sauce or 1/2 cup of Teriyaki sauce
1 cup apple juice or cranberry juice
1 quart of water

Combine all ingredients with water in a 4 quart pot on medium-high heat. Stir and bring to a boil, cover and boil 5 minutes. Remove from heat and strain off lemon rinds or any cooked onions. Refrigerate if not ready to use immediately as hot marinade.

Strain and use in spray bottle for basting pit-smoked meats, especially pit grilled pork ribs, beef ribs, pork chops, pork and beef steaks, lamb chops, poultry, grilled burgers, and pork and beef roasts. The spray-basting also helps control flames in the pit-fire when not overused. For a real hickory-smoke flavor, pre-soak any amount of hickory wood chips in a cup or so of this basic marinade.
Yields 11/2 quarts
NOTE: Marinate meat in 200-degree hot marinade for 20 minutes for super-quick and tasty results.

ESSENTIALS [Small & Silver Screen Edition]

Track Artist Title
1. The result of this marriage was one hit after another for Def Jam Records. You don't need to have a golden ear for samples to detect the guitar riffs that Rick added to songs by LL Cool J as well as the Beastie Boys. Rick was well ahead of the pack when it came to metal rap sound which has now been taken even further by contemporary acts.
On the Beastie Boys' album Licensed to Ill, Rick is credited not only as the producer, but also as co-writer. With Rick's contacts in the world of metal, it was easy to bring in Kerry King of Slayer to play lead guitar on the Beastie Boys' anthem "No Sleep Till Brooklyn." It was Rick, under the name DJ Double R, that performed on stage with the Beastie Boys as they opened for Madonna on her Like A Virgin Tour. Sensing he was on to something big and controversial, Rick went into the studio with the band to record "She's On It". The "She's On It" video featured Rick and the Beastie Boys chasing girls and getting into trouble. What may have seemed innocent at the time, was in fact the launch pad for the skirt chasing chaos that would encircle both Def Jam and the Beastie Boys within the year as Licensed to Ill.

Producer Series Present: LEONARD & PHIL CHESS

Track Artist Title
1. They were involved in the liquor business and by the 1940's, they owned several bars on the south side of Chicago. Their largest establishment was a nightclub called the Macomba. The Macomba had live entertainment, many of those being blues performers that had migrated to Chicago from the Mississippi delta in the '30s and '40s. They realized that these performers were not being properly recorded, so they decided to start recording them themselves.

During the early years of the label, Leonard and Phil Chess did everything. They were the quintessential '50s record men: they owned the label, they produced the music they loved themselves and managed the financial end of the business.

Producer Series Present: QUINCY JONES

Track Artist Title
1. After hearing that, Quincy rushed back to the studio and had the engineer cut 100 acetates of the Lesley Gore versions and mailed them to radio stations over the weekend. Three weeks later, Lesley Gore’s version of the song topped the charts.
"Soul Bossa Nova" was a theme for the 1998 World Cup, the Canadian game show Definition, the Woody Allen film Take The Money And Run and the Mike Myers movie Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery, and was sampled by Canadian hip hop group Dream Warriors for their song, "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style".

Producer Series Present: PHIL SPECTOR

Track Artist Title
1. These traits would serve him well in the recording industry. In 1952 Wexler became a producer at fledgling Atlantic Records, an independent label dedicated to the genre that Wexler himself rechristened "rhythm and blues" in a 1941 Billboard article.

With an intense passion for jazz and soul, Wexler became an expert at distinguishing talent, and during his years at Atlantic, he launched many artists who became world- famous: Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, the Clovers, and the Drifters. He also discovered country legend Willie Nelson before the singer moved to CBS Records and stardom. Wexler's enthusiasm and intellectual edge, in fact, provided the support necessary for many artists' best work. Among the plethora of musicians he has promoted are Joe Turner, Wilson Pickett, Patti LaBelle, Cher, Sam and Dave, Dr. John, Doug Sahm, and Etta James.

the barkers and the coloured balloons

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EphusuWFEfA/Sixld0aV7dI/AAAAAAAAADc/Sbyon98CPys/s320/barkers.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344758420741680594" />

Disc 1
Track Artist Title
1. There was no way for Media Vixen to know that she was a few kilometres from the hideout known as the Forsyth Family Compound. Although she arrived there on a whim, Radio Sally would not have made it this far without decoding messages hidden in "Never Mind the Federales" and "Bukakke Ruined My Carpet" mixes. One thing was certain; she was standing face-to-face with the recently AWOL'd DJ Karen. After it was all said and done, DJ Karen offered up a brief bag full of yankee dollars and a trunkload of tax-free smokes. Radio Sally swore secrecy and also they agreed to this alt-dj mix.

Mixin Vixen: DJ Karen Adams: So who is going to start first?
Media Vixen: Radio Sally: I'll flip you for it!
Mixin Vixen: DJ Karen Adams: [Searching her pocket-less bikini for a coin, she quickly learned that Media Vixen had a more literal interpretation. How do I narrow down decades of work that has influenced musicians, deejays and pop culture alike? I mean, the man did write "Manic Monday" for the Bangles. Well, this mix has been in the making for years. There has been a CD box set and a Greatest Hits disc but I always enjoyed the deep album cuts and the live [unauthorised] releases.
I remember years ago I put together a cassette entitled "B-sides and Bootlegs". I distributed it to all my deejay friends and most of them played tracks in da clubs they worked at. What an honour it was! My favourite Prince songs are usually based on how I feel at the time. So, at the time I compiled, these were my most loved tracks.

[listen]

01 Ballad of Dorothy Parker
02 Still Waiting
03 Condition of the Heart
04 Money Don't Matter 2 Night
05 So Blue
06 17 Days
07 Anotherloverholenyohead
08 Beautiful Ones
09 Temptation
10 Another Lonely Christmas
11 GOD
12 How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore?
13 International Lover
14 While My Guitar Gently Weeps [Live]
15 Diamonds & Pearls [Live]
16 Morning Papers [Live]
17 Future Baby Mama
18 Whole Lotta Love [Live]
19 Free
20 Other Side of the Pillow

STRANGELY EMPTY XXIX: I Want To Believe

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EphusuWFEfA/SNKa4aTcLEI/AAAAAAAAACk/Mn1jdKy1K8Y/s320/sev29.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5247426809764260930" /> I have been having massive computer issues due to adware, spyware and the like. Denny's, TGIFridays and IHOP are at the top of my shit-list. Denny's and IHOP on Delaware Ave are the subject of conversation here. The waitresses are a bit luke warm like the food which is usually hit or miss. Across the road at the International House of Pissing Me Off, the kitchen staff are right on target but the vittles takes forever to arrive at the table. The very first time I and a friend ever stepped foot into this pancake franchise was this past winter. There may have been a half-dozen diners present but the grub took about 30 minutes to materialise. While waiting, we noticed that the others didn't have food and most of us were finished with our drinks. Our server who reaked of old lady parfoom (sic) never offered to refill our glasses, made herself scarce leaving us to choke down our meals. Who says lightning doesn't strike twice? The second time we went to "give it another go" the same thing happened and this time -- just a few weeks ago -- a younger goof forgot we ordered salads. Downtown TGIFridays have a tendency to slop all of the food together on the plate but the alcoholic drinks are strong. Trade off? No thanks, I can drink elsewhere.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EphusuWFEfA/SJqK9GEO9aI/AAAAAAAAAB0/xapcRKrtbas/s200/elpalenque.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231646699349276066" /> A restaurant that has never disappointed is El Palenque (located at Niagara Falls Boulevard and Eggert Road). Authentic Mexican fare at very reasonable prices along with a courteous staff has made us regulars. Highly recommended as an alternative to the [insert word here] found at 5 de Mayo. The waiters are laid back, approachable and pretty damn generous with the free refills. El Palenque takes up real estate at an old Denny's. Now if the remaining Denny's can only close and make way for other El Palenque restaurants. Lastly, I love the music that almost greets you at the door. The next time you are in the Western New York area, the fish-bowl sized margaritas are on me but until then...

01. De Uez En Cuando - Pepe Aguilar
02. "I've Got Dreams to Remember" features over 175 artifacts including photographs, hand-written lyrics, posters, letters and other personal memorabilia, as well as multi-media kiosks exploring Otis Redding's evolution as a singer, composer, arranger and producer. Organized in association with the Otis Redding Estate, the exhibition was curated by Ellen Fleurov, president of Crossroads Traveling Exhibitions, Atlanta. The exhibition was named "Museum Exhibition of the Year" by the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries in January 2008.

01. It is believed that she wished to be more than just a friend to Al Green. One night, she left the guest quarters, then entered the main section of the house without permission. She snuck into his bathroom to make a surprise attack. With no warning, she threw a large pot of boiling grits over him as he was undressed and preparing to shower. As Green writhed in pain, she ran into another part of the house and committed suicide by shooting herself.

01. Al Green - Let's Stay Together
02. I posted a brand new mix for this brand new blog instead of re-posting an old one. Oh, don't worry; there wlll be enuff time for that later.
